Dedicated to the Multi-Event

20 in 2: The Icosathlon, (also referred to as the Double Decathlon) is a track and field competition in which the athlete must complete all twenty track and field events over two days (which includes completing a standard decathlon in addition to the ten other events,) scoring points using IAAF scoring formulas and new formulas for the 10 additional events.  It is a grueling test of an athlete's endurance, specific technical skill, explosive strength, jumping and running ability.  After finishing seventh in the 2005 World Championship, I began to train for more.  This is the blog of my journey, dedicated to promoting multi events, including the Icosathlon, as well as promoting a friendly, healthy track and field community...

Dimitry's Full Recap of the 2005 Double Dec.

July 30, 2007

Why Aren't More Heroin Addicts Employed?...

You would figure with such a powerful need for money, addicts would make the best employees.  Imagine the feeling of reward for every paycheck ("can you pay me bi-daily?")  Turns out the only jobs that earn enough to keep your job and addiction are those of rock stars and actors.  Thank god shot puts don't cost much, or I'd have to learn to act or sing.

On another happy note, UCD Alum Matt Chisam, who had back-to-back 7200+ decs 6 days apart, scored 7603 in Texas, just getting the USA B Standard for the 2008 Olympic Trials!  A huge PR and a mark that should make the top 18 field they will run.  A 4:41 1500 (PR) to just squeak over the cutoff, with help from the decs and heps cheering him on -- THIS is what this sport is all about.  Great performance, great meet - great job, Matt!

Also, the Women's Decathlon All-time Marks has been further updated, with fixed errors, new marks from 2007 meets (yes, there have been some in Italy), and now includes a new page with scores for the individual events.  I have a running forum in decathlon2000.ee and my forum for the women's decathlon -- if you listen real carefully you can hear the crickets chirping. When is it too late to get an exhibition and who do you lobby for these things?  (In other words, help!)  To help this matter, Tiffany Fields will be hosting a decathlon (open and women's) up here in Mid-July 2008, after USATF trails.

I also have a new topic for training for the icosathlon, which I started with my personal insight but by no means is going to be appropriate for each athlete - it's just my take on it.  A strong middle distance guy or thrower/jumper decathlete are going to have different training needs, which is why it's in a forum and not a webpage saying "this is exactly how."  Family men and women who need to train "under the radar" should check out my "Warning Signs!" page to see what you will need to be conscious of, and what your partner may be looking for.

The ankle from the Santa Barbara dec is healing nicely and I'm able to vault again.  (yay!)  I even did a 1200/800/400 at an all-comer competition, running a 54 for the closing leg of a 4x400.  My son Devin, who just turned 4 years old, ran a 47 second 200 meters!! It looks like sometime around 13-14 years old, when dad turns the ominous 40, we might have a new "fastest Yakoushkin."

The 2008 US Icosathlon now has 3 strong possibilities for a home here in the Bay Area.  By labor day, we'll have a date and place, and I'll start taking entries!  To have something to look forward to, I have a 2008 calendar up for N. California meets.  As I learn more, it will be continuously updated.

Lastly, a new site I discovered that I now spend WAY too much time on is http://www.sportnet.com/ -- they have HOURS of footage for every event from every major meet this year.  (!!)  Where else can you see an ENTIRE 5k, and then SLOW MOTION replays of the finish from multiple angles? The women's 800 in the IAAF golden league meet in mid July must have shown the finish 100 meters in slow-motion 5 times.  And every long jump, repeated in slow motion.  Heaven.  UPDATE:  My buddy and fellow decathlete Leo Garcia recently emailed me with IAAF's new multimedia offerings - including complete video coverage of... decathlons!  Click here to see the current list of videos.
